Motorway driving lessons have recently had a lot of publicity in the news. You may ask why motorway driving lessons are the talk of the town?
Well the reason is very simple, from the 4th June 2018 the DVSA have allowed Approved Driving instructors (ADI's) to take out learner drivers onto the motorways of Great Britain. Please remember that its only ADI's who have a dual controlled vehicle are allowed to do this.
Trainee driving instructors (PDI's) won’t be allowed to take learner drivers on the motorway.
Driving instructors will decide if they want to use a rooftop box during a motorway lesson. The car will need to display L plates on the front and rear if the rooftop box is removed.
Do not worry if you do not live near a motorway because motorway driving lessons won't be mandatory and motorway driving won't ever be tested on the driving test as some people and test centres alike live many hours from their closest motorway. Despite there being thousands miles of motorway network, there are many hundreds of miles of the country where many thousands of learner drivers and driving instructors, will not have easy access to a motorway.
Please remember that any motorway lessons will be voluntary. It will be up to the ADI to decide when the learner driver is competent enough for them.
Remember the dual carriageways that you have been learning on upto now will keep you in good stead for entering onto a motorway. Just remember that you might have to travel 25 miles before you can exit off so be sure you feel confident before you enter onto the motorway system.
Why motorway driving lessons?
Why not? Since 1958 we have had motorways in the UK. There were 160,597 casualties in the year 2018 on the UK motorways, so why shouldn't new drivers take the plunge and learn how to drive on them with a fully qualified ADI. It would be a heck of a lot safer than just winging it once you have passed your driving test.
Things you might learn on a motorway driving lesson are as follows
The list could go on but these are the main subject we think should be taught when you are out on the motorway with your driving instructor.
Am I ready?
Maybe, maybe not....its not for you to decide unfortunately. Your driving instructor will guide you in this decision. If you have tackled lots of large fast flowing dual carriageways and this has become second nature then yes your driving instructor might suggest it.
This is just a brief explanation to give you a flavour of whats to come if you live nearby a motorway. We wish you all the best for your driving lessons and hope that you have found this slightly informative.
